Ontario Outback

It seems that I made a mistake not sending myself on the Ontario Outback trip. They have been paddling for 2 days now and have loved every minute of it. They put in on Bell Lake on Wednesday after a night at George Lake Campground. Their first day of paddling was short and gave them plenty of time to set up their first backcountry campsite. The mosquitoes moved in at sunset, but didn’t bother everyone too much. Group dynamics are great as everyone seems to be pretty laid back.

Thursday brought them more paddling and a portage to Balsam Lake. It was only 30 meters and they were ready for their first of many portages. However, a little surprise was waiting for them in the form of a cart on rails. It made their first portage a breeze and they were on their way to their campsite on Balsam. They took the extra time to practice some canoe rescues which were all successful. Everyone is doing really well with the paddling and just enjoying their time and surroundings. Today they will be portaging to David Lake and hiking up Silver Peak.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to get any photos from them at this point, but you can check out some photos of Killarney Provincial Park on the Ontario Parks site at http://www.parkreports.com/gallery/gallery.php?park=Killarney.

  • Hello Chelsea,

We have heard about your bear adventure. It sounds like you are having a fantastic time. Dad wants to know why you didn’t hang your food. So much for bear pails.

We are looking forward to hearing all about it.
