Playin’ in the Woods

Today our campers woke to seasonable chilly weather up here in the mountains, but the rays of the shining sun have kept us all warm in tee-shirts today. Advill Try-it campers began the day by sadly beginning to pack up their belongings to leave Frost Valley for the summer. Meanwhile, Advill met up with the campers of Lakota Village for a morning of games and activities.

After they had packed up, Advill Try-it met up with the boys of the MAC program and once again headed up the creek for some good ol’ exploration and discovery. Our campers showed the MAC boys a thing or two about their stomping grounds, and they all sat down to carve rocks that they’d found in the creek. Advill headed out to the Zip-line and the other elements around camp for some excitement, daring, and teamwork.

After a big lunch, our campers went over to the Y-Tower to experience the thrill of our Zip-line. There were many first-timers, screams of excitement, and bouts of laughter when back on the ground. Later in the afternoon, Advill Try-it decided to play their own version of America’s most beloved pastime. S’moresBall, their version of baseball, incentivizes players by putting at each base a different ingredient of a S’more. In the end, everybody is a winner, and there were many marshmallow and chocolate covered cheeks at the end of the afternoon. At this time Advill went out Creekin’ themselves, another afternoon of just goofing around in the woods.

Tonight, our Advill Try-it campers will hold their Closing Ceremony, reflecting on the past week and looking forward to the future – a full session of Advill next summer. We will bid them a fond farewell, and we’ll see them next summer!

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Zach couldn't keep himself out of the woods when growing up. He started working at a Northern Wisconsin YMCA Camp as a wilderness trip leader while in college and fell in love with getting kids into nature. The smiles on kids faces after returning from a once in a life time wilderness experience is why he is here today. Zach brought his talents to Frost Valley YMCA, in 2014, when he started as the Trips Coordinator and soon was promoted to Adventure Director. Zach loves all forms of Wilderness exploration, though some would say his heart lies most with canoeing.
