White Mountains Say Hi!

Our White Mountain kayakers have hit the water hard and fast!  Our group is doing very well picking up the technical skills of kayaking and have been learning to turn into smaller and smaller eddies (a spot in the river where they can rest – it takes some skill to maneuver into and out of eddies as you must paddle against a current) as well as surf different sections of the river.  Surfing is a term used to try to stay on top of one rapid for a period of time before the boat is swept downriver with the current.  It sounds like our campers are becoming “wet exit” extraordinaires – meaning if their boat flips over (which happens a lot while white water kayaking – it’s part of the experience!) they are great at getting right out again.

The group did a really good evening devotion last night that had everyone opening up and getting to know each other even more.  And finally, it sounds like it’s taken some time, but our campers are slowly getting much used to the camping side of things!  Our sites for the kayaking are more primitive than other trips some campers have been on, with outhouses instead of flushing toilets and a hose they have to walk to, to get water.  Returning to a campsite with showers and bathrooms sounds like it will be a welcome change of pace Tuesday evening!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Zach eigenbrodt

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Zach couldn't keep himself out of the woods when growing up. He started working at a Northern Wisconsin YMCA Camp as a wilderness trip leader while in college and fell in love with getting kids into nature. The smiles on kids faces after returning from a once in a life time wilderness experience is why he is here today. Zach brought his talents to Frost Valley YMCA, in 2014, when he started as the Trips Coordinator and soon was promoted to Adventure Director. Zach loves all forms of Wilderness exploration, though some would say his heart lies most with canoeing.
