In honor of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month we are spotlighting our Tokyo – Frost Valley Partnership. The Tokyo New York YMCA Partnership (TNYP) was formed in 1979 in order to serve the needs of an ever-growing Japanese population in New York, with Tatsuo Honma as its first Executive Director. Eventually, the collaboration between the Tokyo and Frost Valley YMCAs deepened, and in 1991 the TNYP changed its name to the Tokyo – Frost Valley YMCA Partnership (TFYP). Since March 2020 with the emergence of the COVID-19 virus, there have been approximately 2,800 acts of hate and violence perpetrated against Asian Americans.* In addition to the recent shooting in Atlanta, which claimed the lives of Daoyou Feng, Xiaojie Tan, Delaina Ashley Yaun, Andre Michels, Soon C. Park, Hyun J. Grant, Suncha Kim and Yong A. Yue, there have been many racially motivated attacks in California, New York, and other states against Asian Americans, which are not only heartbreaking; they are completely unacceptable. While the challenges of this year may have been dissuading and discouraging at times, we are further inspired by the unwavering dedication of the camping community to join in solidarity today to reaffirm a simple, beautiful, powerful message: Black Lives Matter.
