The farm has been experiencing some weather reminiscent of that in Autumn- very chilly, very windy, very beautiful. The staff decided the best way to celebrate this out-of-season weather was to embrace it by celebrating Halloween a few months early! The day was filled with all sorts of activities! To start, the campers made their own costumes. This morning in garden specialty, the gardeners were divided into two pirate teams and had a race to remove all of the precious “gold” from the potato patch. The competition was fierce, but ultimately the two teams came to a tie and helped our potatoes be able to grow big and delicious without the hindrance of rocks!   After the gold hunt, gardeners harvested and snacked on some yummy carrots and then helped make beautiful boquets to be put on each table in our dining hall.   We had a wonderful morning in the garden despite the light rain, and all the campers were very helpful in making the potato […]

This morning the boys of yurt 7 braved the cold and the dark to do a sunrise hike on the popular trail of Giant’s Ledge! The boys left camp at 4am and drive about 40 minutes to the trailhead. They hiked up 1.5 miles in the dark, and ate breakfast with one of the most beautiful views in the Catskills.     When they got back to camp, they slept the entire morning as a reward for waking up so early. This session our theme day was Colonial Farm Day! Campers spent the morning learning colonial games, practicing blacksmithing in the forge, and creating colonial costumes. In the afternoon they created small trinkets to barter, and then traded their items with other campers, modeling a traditional barter and trade economy. At night they had a camp dance with our friends from down the road at East Valley Ranch!     As you can see in the pictures, it was a beautiful day. It’s hard to believe there’s only two days left in the session!
