Tonight saw most of the Hird go out on overnights! Our campers from Pac, Windsong, Sunburst, Tacoma, and Lenape all headed out to spend a night under the stars. They cooked over open fires (pita pizzas or mac and cheese), shared stories, and ate smores! Pac, Windsong, and Lenape will be spending a 2nd night out tomorrow, and everyone else will be returning to enjoy our normal daily schedule. Below is a photo of a Tacoma camper with her perfectly cooked marshmallow.

Today was another great day in the Hird! During the day we had a mix of different activities including Hemlock playing Geronimo with Al (Geronimo is like a giant game of musical chairs, just with added rules), and our first day of free swim at the Waterfont. This evening saw Tacoma, Lenape, MAC Boys, and STEP join Al for challenge night (a version of Minute to Win It with teams and challenges), Pac and Windsong host their own Challenge Night, and Hemlock join Adventure Village for a game of Wells Fargo (a giant game of capture the flag and tag). Tomorrow our first overnights of the session go out. Windsong […]

The first day of every session is always a really exciting time for our campers and staff. They learn all of the cheers of their village, cheers that have been passed down from generation to generation over decades. Alumni who came back to visit always get so excited to hear the same cheers they remember from being campers. Our staff have an extra emphasis on group dynamics on the first day. They play a lot of teambuilding games and get-to-know-you games to bring the whole cabin together. My favorite part of the first day is when our leadership team comes together to schedule for the week. I love hearing and […]

It has been the perfect weather to go swimming here at camp! In this photo Lenape campers are enjoying cooling off while playing football in the refreshing water. Kids have the opportunity to swim, jump on the trampoline, or try their hand at boating. It gives campers the opportunity to try something new and exciting everyday they come to the waterfront.

Today was our first all camp theme day of the summer! Every Sunday starts off with brunch, everyone gets to sleep in a little bit later than normal (which after a long and active week is really appreciated). After brunch and a rest period we all went down to the soccer field to have our annual USA vs. Rest of the World staff soccer game. Everyone enjoyed a snack and watched an exciting game that finished 4-2 in favor of our international staff.   Afterwards we had our Small World’s Fair. Our staff from different parts of the world set up booths to celebrate their cultures and to share with […]

After a few days of pretty intense days, the heat finally broke and we had a wonderful perfect summer day, we still emphasized drinking water and sunscreen though! This morning saw some of our Hemlock campers take part in archery and the others letting their creative juices flow with candles in our special candlemaking studio (brand new last summer). While that was going on, our Sacky and Tacoma campers were having a tea party with campers from Pokey Totem (our youngest village) and Mini-MAC. This was a great opportunity to bond with younger campers and be positive role models. In the afternoon, Pac took part in Flag Racing, a new […]

Today was a busy day in Camp Henry Hird! We had the first of our overnight hikes go out for the session. Pac and Windsong both do a 2 night overnight in our East Valley. Pac are staying at Pine Grove tonight, a beautiful spot right in the middle of a canopy of pine trees. Windsong are staying at Merrill Pavilion. Merrill has a panoramic view of the Catskills, the campers were very excited to get up early and watch the sun rise tomorrow. After tonight they will swap places so stay tuned for a photo of our Pac campers at Merrill! The rest of our villages will all be […]

Hello and welcome to the Camp Henry Hird blog – the blog about the older half of overnight camp! We will be updating this blog every day, typically in the evening, so we highly recommend checking it first thing in the morning. It is the first day of camp which means that everyone is settling in, getting to know their cabin mates, drinking water to stay hydrated, and doing activities in the shade to stay cool. I just quickly wanted to share with you a photo from last night’s Hird Opening Campfire. We had a great campfire with a whole range of acts from skits to songs. We start and […]

This weekend had a really relaxed feel to it with villages taking it easy on Saturday after a busy week, and Sunday’s theme (Hirdstock) being a more laidback one. Saturday had some awesome moments. All of the Hird villages started by celebrating ‘Stewardship Saturday’ by helping to clean up program spaces and living spaces around camp, making it a place we can be proud to live and play in (Stewardship is also one of our core values!). Tacoma got into the festive mood on Saturday afternoon, hosting a wedding for 2 of their counselors. There was a bouncy house to celebrate as well as a beautiful cake (thanks to the […]
