Bareback Riders at Mustang Village

Today the girls had the opportunity to truly work on developing their riding skills through bareback riding.  This means that during their lesson the girls sit directly on their horses barn.  Not only does it teach great balance and control, but it also shows the girls what a horses body moves like under the saddle.   They had the chance to build up their thigh and leg muscles as they did a variety of exercises to help them balance and move with their horse.  Bareback riding also allows you to feel as if you are really connecting with your horse and that you are moving as one.  They learned about native american uses of the horse as well as horse painting.  In many native american cultures horses were painted with a variety of colors and symbols to represent details about a horse, and give strength to their rider.  They had the chance to paint some of our horses and then the girls themselves were painted!

In the afternoon it was time for a Mustang tradition….greased watermellon.  Teams must try to wrangle 6 greased watermelons from one side of waterfront to the other.  It is great to see girls working together, getting dirty and playing with their friends.   A tractor ride to learn about horse behavior rounded out the afternoon.  I am heading to dinner with the girls in just a few moments and then a night hike should make for an amazing end to the day!  Tomorrow is the start of Olympix and two days of fun challenges!
