There’s something special about a dad going camping with his children. It’s an adventure filled with sugary sweets that you don’t tell Mom about, building huge campfires, and trying new things that you’ve never done before. Here at Frost Valley, we are proud to host many groups of dads and their children throughout the year. Many join us through the YMCA’s Adventure Guides program, a tradition that began in St. Louis 90 years ago. Others are groups of dads that band together to give their children an unforgettable experience while enjoying friendship with each other.

When groups of dads and their children visit Frost Valley for a weekend, there are endless benefits: Dads share camaraderie and social time with other dads, kids make new friends, and memories are made – memories that last a lifetime. In between the sugary sweets, huge campfires, and competitive games of Broomball and Floor Hockey, there is a special bond. I often see dads reading to their children in the Lower Solarium of the dining hall or taking intimate hikes in the woods exploring all that nature has to offer.

Both this weekend and the last, we have had many dads visit us with their children. We may not have the snow to run our usual Cross Country Skiing and Snow Tubing programs, but we’ve had a lot of fun with new things, including projects at our Wood Shop, folding books into pieces of artwork, a Mad Science program, and a Frost Valley Spa program that offered natural facials with soap and Chapstick making.

Every time I see dads and kids having a great time on the weekend here, I think about my own dad and the memories that I have with him as a child. We sled down a lot of hills, and I was everyone’s “little sister” when I crashed a couple Cub Scout camp-outs with him, but we never had a weekend quite like the ones that our guests enjoy here. I only hope that if and when my husband and I have our own children, he is able to take advantage of winter weekends like these and have those same memories. As always, thank you to everyone who has joined us so far this winter. We look forward to a great season, and we definitely hope that Mother Nature brings us some snow soon!!!
