Have you tried cross-country skiing? If you have, then you know it’s a rewarding workout that’s both challenging and fun, but you might not even realize all of the ways this activity is improving your health and well-being. Here are five reasons to dust off the skis (or borrow a pair from us!) and hit the trails this winter.

1. Cross-Country Skiing is a Total Body Workout

You’ll use both your lower body to propel yourself forward and your upper body, including your core, to maintain balance. Muscle strengthening activities such as these are great for improving coordination, metabolic rate, and burning excess fat.

2. Reduce Stress and Ease Anxiety

Nearly any physical activity is good for reducing stress and anxiety; however, gliding along a pristine winter wonderland (such as the Neversink river) provides the peaceful, serene setting so many of us crave.

3. Improve Mental Focus

Especially if you are new to the sport, cross-country skiing takes focus and mental clarity to maintain balance and perfect your stride. Learning any complex skill has been proven to keep your mind sharp and focused.

4. Easy on the Knees

Because cross-country skiing is a low-impact sport, you don’t have to worry about impact to your joints such as your knees or hips. In fact, the gliding motion required to cross-country ski can be therapeutic for some people with aching joints.

5. It’s FUN!

In our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to forget how important (and enjoyable) it is to laugh and make new memories. Learning to cross-country ski, especially alongside loved ones, can be a silly sight to watch at first. As long as everyone keeps a positive outlook, it can create those special moments that your friends and family will be talking about for years to come.
