Ramble on

Only this group of teens could take a dreary, cold 4th of July and make it into a glorious day. We started off with chocolate chip pancakes and there was entertainment in the form of an inchworm.

The group split up according to interests when they arrived in Lake Placid: some went to the horse show and others to mini-golf. After that, they met up in town to watch the parade, check out the stores along Main Street, and have a nice dinner out before the fireworks. They were joined by the Habitat crew on a tarp in the park and they slid down the wet hill with the annual Lake Placid fireworks booming over the water.

The next morning, we packed up and headed for Tupper Lake to start the canoe trip. After a paddling lesson, they put their bows into the wind as they headed 4 miles down the shore towards Slim Cove for their first night out.

DEC Ranger Julie Harjung was kind enough to give me a ride in her boat so that we could check the site. Then we stopped by the paddlers to give them their camping permit and send them on their way. The weather held out all night and I am sure the s’mores were fantastic. Today they will continue paddling around Tupper Lake and spend another night at a primitive site before meeting me back at the boat launch on Saturday morning. Born and raised in Wisconsin, Zach couldn't keep himself out of the woods when growing up. He started working at a Northern Wisconsin YMCA Camp as a wilderness trip leader while in college and fell in love with getting kids into nature. The smiles on kids faces after returning from a once in a life time wilderness experience is why he is here today. Zach brought his talents to Frost Valley YMCA, in 2014, when he started as the Trips Coordinator and soon was promoted to Adventure Director. Zach loves all forms of Wilderness exploration, though some would say his heart lies most with canoeing.
