Greetings from San Diego! We had a hassle-free trip out to California yesterday. Between the in-flight movie and some always-interesting airline food, the flight just flew by (sorry, I couldn’t resist). After a trip to In-N-Out Burger and Wal-Mart, we set up camp on the beach at YMCA Camp Surf. We spent the evening just talking and hanging out at our campsite trying to stay up late to fight the jet-lag. Of course, we were up early anyway as we were excited to get surfing. After a great breakfast (pancakes and sausage), we had a quick orientation to the waterfront and met our surf instructor, Aussie Josh. He got us surfboards and talked to us about the basics before we hit the water to try it out.

Everyone caught a few good waves and stood up on the board. It was an amazing morning that proved to me how great this group is. They all worked hard, supported each other, and had fun. We also spent some time playing basketball and ricochet before lunch. Now we are off to the climbing tower and there is body boarding later in the afternoon. Thank you once again for allowing your teen to come on this trip. It is an honor to have each and every one of them here. Check back in a couple of days for updates, but for now I will leave you with a photo.

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Zach couldn't keep himself out of the woods when growing up. He started working at a Northern Wisconsin YMCA Camp as a wilderness trip leader while in college and fell in love with getting kids into nature. The smiles on kids faces after returning from a once in a life time wilderness experience is why he is here today. Zach brought his talents to Frost Valley YMCA, in 2014, when he started as the Trips Coordinator and soon was promoted to Adventure Director. Zach loves all forms of Wilderness exploration, though some would say his heart lies most with canoeing.
