3 canoes on lake cole

Half Way Point!!

Today marks the half way point to our Adventure trips and every group is having a blast!

Boots and Boats
Boots and Boats started the trip off back packing in the High Peaks area in the Adirondack’s. The 4 day hike proved to be challenging but rewarding with the beautiful vistas throughout their hike. They then had a day off were they just relaxed and began planning their canoeing part of the trip. They left for their canoe trip today.

Adirondack Rambler
The Rambler group began their trip White Water rafting in the Adirondack area. Everyone really seemed to enjoy that part of the trip. They then began their canoeing portion of the trip for 3 days. They puddle jumped (moving from small lake to small lake) exploring every nook and cranny of each pond and lake that they could in a 3 days time. The kids began master paddlers in such a short time of paddling. After the canoe portion, they are taking the next few days to explore the nearby peaks.

Maine Coast
This trip was so popular we actually had to send out two trip this session. The trip started off wet and stormy but then has cleared up since and has been nothing but beautiful weather since. Our 1st trip, consisting of all males, was suppose to bike for the first two days but was only able to bike the first day due to stormy weather the second. They were able to make the best of the day by going into town and enjoyed a day of bowling and food. The sun had perfect timing for them to enjoy climbing in Otter Bay. They kids absolutely loved it and really stepped out of their comfort zones to make it to the very top. After some exhausting, the group had a day off and got ready for the next 4 days of sea kayaking of the coast. The second group started their trip with sea kayaking and had to play some creative games on an island due to the uncooperative weather.  Once the sun came out, the kids were able to really enjoy the following days, sea kayaking the Atlantic Coast. They were able to explore what the islands around Acadia National Park had to offer. Both trips met up this afternoon to enjoy some soccer at the park and story telling about their recent adventures.

Maine Trail Builders
Our trail builders group has been affected by their weather the most with the weather but our trip leaders and campers have been flexible and positive to really make the most of it. Their first two days had to be rescheduled due to the poor weather which mean’t it was time to explore the island. They stopped at the visitors center and made a game plan to see different parts of the island. They checked out a few different natural gardens and a few different beach areas when the rain let up. After 2 days it was time to get to work! They were out in full force rebuilding the trails and really maintaining the park. After the first day of work, it was time to take a break and do some biking. The kids really seemed to love biking the carriage roads taking them from vista to vista. Today was used as a make up day and they went back to work on the trails.

Each trip is running so smoothly and I can only imagine that it will get better. The growth of confidence and community among these groups is incredible and its only half way through their trip! We will post pictures once the trips get back.

Happy Trails

Zach eigenbrodt

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Zach couldn't keep himself out of the woods when growing up. He started working at a Northern Wisconsin YMCA Camp as a wilderness trip leader while in college and fell in love with getting kids into nature. The smiles on kids faces after returning from a once in a life time wilderness experience is why he is here today. Zach brought his talents to Frost Valley YMCA, in 2014, when he started as the Trips Coordinator and soon was promoted to Adventure Director. Zach loves all forms of Wilderness exploration, though some would say his heart lies most with canoeing.
