Horse Day Camp: Archery, Bareback Riding, and Trotting

It has been a very busy week in horse day camp with all of the sunshine and horse rides. Hoof Beats has gotten to go all over camp to try new activities and meet new friends. Western Adventures has spent a lot of time learning more and more about their horses for the session and keeping them well taken care of.

Tuesday, Hoof Beats spent the morning at the barn riding their horses and learning about colors and breeds in their ground lessons. Later on, they tested their skills as Robin Hood at the archery range. For many of them, it was their first time using a bow and arrow. Almost everybody hit the target and some people even hit the bulls eye! In the afternoon, everybody enjoyed cooling off in the lake! Western Adventures spent the morning at the barn. Every day they get the special chance to groom and tack their own horses before their ride. Some of the girls are already trotting in their lessons.

On Wednesday, Hoof Beats got a special treat. All of the kids got the chance to see what it is like to ride bareback. That means every single Hoof Beats and Western Adventures got to ride a horse without a saddle. After their fun morning at the barn, Hoof Beats went to Frost Valley’s nature room. They got to learn all about the animals around Frost Valley by making their tracks in the sand, looking at x-rays, and even petting Houdini, the snake. Everyone had a blast and wished they could have spent more time learning about all of the animals nearby. Western Adventures spent their morning in riding lessons and ground lessons. They learned a lot about the different types of feed and what the purpose of each is. They will be able to own their own horse in no time!

Thursday morning Hoof Beats went to the barn and got to trot for the first time! It was a little bit more bouncy than our usual walking, but everyone had a blast trying something new in their lesson.  Many of the kids got to paint our mini-horses (Eenie, Meenie, Minie, and Moe) and braid their manes and tails. Everyone’s hands were covered in paint by the end of the morning. After we cleaned up, we headed to the soccer field. Many folks played a friendly game of soccer, while the rest drew fabulous pictures with sidewalk chalk.
