Mustang Building Bareback Skills!

Today it’s about 85 degrees, sunny with a light breeze.  Mustang’s schedule was a bit different this morning.  They spent the morning at the barn working on a new skill….bareback riding.  This means that during their lesson, each camper sits directly on their horses back without a saddle or a pad.  This allows the girls the chance to feel how their horses muscles move.  It also teaches better balance as riders must use their legs to keep themselves seated properly.  Bareback riding is definitely challenging, and many girls said they could feel the muscles in their legs and bums hurting afterwards because they were using muscles that they don’t normally use.

Girls also had the chance to learn about native american horse painting.  Native Americans use a variety of paints and symbols on their horses for ceremonies and before going into battle.  After hearing a bit about this, the girls helped to paint one of the horses…and then helped to bathe it afterwards 🙂  Each girl also had the chance to get their faces painted.  It was a really fun morning.

After lunch and rest hour all of the girls and staff went to the waterfront for a Mustang Village tradition….Greased Watermellon.  Basically we take five watermelons, cover them in Crisco, throw them into the shallow section of the lake and the girls must work as teams to move the slimy slippery watermelons to their side.  It was a fun and silly game for everyone to enjoy!

Now we are heading out for a tractor ride and then dinner.  Tonight the girls will enjoy a night hike to learn about the Catskill Mountains after dark.  Tomorrow many of the girls are excited for Frost Valley’s All Camp which is a carnival!
