Assistance with Virtual Learning Combined with Outdoor Education
“As a parent, to see how happy my daughter is makes my heart smile. She even sees some of her friends from school who she has not seen since March! She laughs and tells us of her adventures each day. … This program really is a blessing to the kids in our community. You are giving children a way to be around peers, interact socially and be active in a safe environment.” Parent Testimonial
We understand the many challenges and concerns families have about the 2020-21 school year. As a leader in youth development for over 100 years, Frost Valley YMCA is especially well equipped to address these challenges, given our 5,000 acre property that allows for social distancing, our experienced professional staff, and our mission to serve all. During a time when so much uncertainty exists, Frost Valley YMCA’s new “Outdoor & Virtual Learning Center” (OVLC) is now available for your child.
About the OVLC
This new program is a fully licensed, full-day and after-school learning center for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.* Beginning this fall, registered students will fully engage in their school’s virtual learning programs here at Frost Valley YMCA. Under the supervision of experienced facilitators, school time will take place in clean, comfortable rooms that allow for a minimum of 6-feet social distance between workspaces. After their virtual learning is completed for the day, students participate in a number of outdoor educational and recreational activities.
Located at our main camp property (2000 Frost Valley Road) the OVLC hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-5:30 pm. Part-Time and Full-Time options will be available to accommodate local (Tri-Valley Central, Liberty, Fallsburg) school schedules. Pricing packages are outlined below, and as a fully licensed program, child care assistance payments will be accepted for those who qualify.
*Do you need care for children pre-k or younger? Be sure to check out our Little Rainbows Daycare, which has space available for your little one right now!
Virtual Learning Time
Each group, of no more than 10 students, will be assigned a facilitator to guide them through their day. Our facilitators will provide support for each student’s virtual schooling requirements. While we will defer to each students’ teacher for all educational assessments, curricula, and instruction, our onsite facilitators are available to provide minimal tech support, answer simple questions, and manage classroom behavior. Students are responsible for bringing all tech equipment required to complete their schoolwork.
Outdoor & Experience-Based Learning Opportunities
Once students’ school work is complete, there’s still so much to do and learn! Frost Valley has been a leader in youth development for over 100 years, and we’re eager to use our 5,000 acres of forests, fields, and waterways as your child’s outdoor classroom! Children have ample opportunity for hands-on learning, exploration, and recreation. From hiking to pond ecology to archery, there’s so much to experience at Frost Valley YMCA. When the weather prevents outdoor time, plenty of indoor programming will be offered so that the engaging and enriching activities can continue!
Although our facilitators will not be offering school instruction (students will be conducting virtual schoolwork provided by their own schools), all of our college-educated facilitators have multiple years professional experience in youth development, specific training for working with school-aged children, a criminal background check, and First Aid and CPR certifications.
Activities may include: hiking to our onsite waterfall, cable bridge hikes, pond ecology, archery, arts and crafts, socially distant sports and games, raptor center visits to meet our resident owls and hawks, visits to our greenhouse to learn about gardening and agriculture, and more!
COVID-19 Safety Precautions
All NYS COVID-19 mitigation practices will be followed as well as additional precautions Frost Valley has chosen to implement. Expect these practices to be similar to our day camp health precautions, which have been successful this summer in keeping everyone healthy. All children and staff will undergo a brief health check each morning (including having temperatures taken). Children and staff will wear masks when necessary. Social distancing will be adhered to and individuals experiencing symptoms of any kind (staff and children alike) will be required to stay home. We will provide more detailed descriptions of our health and safety protocols upon registration.
Transportation & Meals
Transportation for Tri-Valley School students WILL be available through the school, and some families may be able to continue meal services. More details TBA!
At this time, Frost Valley is unable to provide our own transportation or meals, so families must be prepared to provide transport to and from Frost Valley, and children should bring a sack lunch. However, for families who are interested, we do have a limited number of work-stations for parents/guardians who would like to limit their travel time to our property and conduct work onsite. To abide by social distancing practices, these work stations are limited in number and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. An additional charge for work stations applies.
