The Last day of Adventure Village (for session 2)

Mini trips returned yesterday through the afternoon and packed their belongings back into their rightful places. All the sleeping bags washed and the pots and pans scrubbed. Elbow grease is the best way to celebrate an amazing return to camp! Later that evening as one lone Eureka tent blew across the field the Adventure Villagers settled into their home to ice cream and a nature video. Usually we don’t watch videos at camp but after a long couple days in the woods ice cream and a movie serve as sufficient motivation to shower and rest.

Highlights from the mini trips were the all around goofiness from the paddlers in the dacks who spent the evenings doing loops on the clear mountain. The determined drive from the Catskill back packers who powered through a rain storm to get to their campsite. One soggy night on trail was tiring but absolutely an adventure to remember! The climbers discovered new routes at the Gunks and we sent more guides this session so the campers got to climb twice as much. The Dacks backpacking trip spent two days in the woods before heading out to Lake Placid and Adirondack Rock and River Outfitters for rock climbing. This was unscheduled but for minor medical reasons the group changed their plan and everyone had an outstanding time. Finally the Catskills canoeing trip spent an extra day on camp learning strokes before putting in on the East Branch of the Delaware. The river is world famous for flyfishing and some of the campers claim to have seen a 3 ft sturgeon.

Today the campers woke up and hit the valley for one last brisk day of fun. Campers creeked and participated in large camp games throughout the day before heading to the hidden Ewok Village campsite for their closing ceremony. Campers shared their experiences and told stories from the week under the crystal night stars of the Catskills.

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Zach couldn't keep himself out of the woods when growing up. He started working at a Northern Wisconsin YMCA Camp as a wilderness trip leader while in college and fell in love with getting kids into nature.
