Thoughts from a Weekend Guest
A cherished Frost Valley Guest, Greer G., attended a writing class at Frost Valley offered by dedicated volunteer and renowned author, Sherry Sontag, this past Memorial Day Weekend. We were eager to share the following piece from Greer that shows a unique part of Frost Valley that many may overlook, yet it holds a special place in Greer’s memories of Frost Valley:
The soynut butter is creamy like peanut butter, the kind I have at home in the jar with the blue lid in the fridge—but it’s not the same. It’s a nut free, healthier twist I’d never tasted until I came to Frost Valley eight years ago for the first time. And now it’s the taste of Frost Valley for me. I thought of the big tub sitting on the communal table in the Frost Valley dining hall the whole four hour ride up here.
Now it’s here in front of me—right next to the bread that has its own unique earthy taste. I’m convinced it has something healthy in it—it tastes a bit like the air up here—a mix of dirt and grass and wind and the chance to look far out in the distance—out accross the lake next to the boathouse—and inward.
I take one slice of bread, and fold it in half as if it were a sheet of paper. I gently separate it into two triangles with my fingers, lightly. Then, it’s ready for the soynut butter I spread on—thicker than I’d allow myself to do at home. This matters. It is the first taste of something I’ve waited all year for—and I have my head and heart set on getting it right.
Thank you Sherry and Greer for keeping the magic of Frost Valley alive!
