Trial Run, and Banana Fun
Today we got out in the woods and tested some of our boots and gear. The older campers took the entire day to hike to Doubletop Mountain. Doubletop is the hardest trail-less peak in the Catskills and it’s in Frost Valley’s back yard. The campers left early and made it to the summit by mid day. There’s a plane crash from the 60’s near the top that the campers explored when they got there. The legend says, Bud Cox took campers up to find that plane crash and that originally started the Adventure Program. Visiting the site is both awesome and historically significant for our program.
The other campers hiked to High Falls where they explored the most amazing waterfall on camp property. In the afternoon the younger campers played big games and learned to cook on trail. They also took some time in the late afternoon to explore some of the creeks in the area.
After dinner when everyone had arrived we spent some time telling stories from the day’s adventures. Then the group united for a giant game of Banana Olympics! This is where the cabins are broken into teams and they compete in different banana related challenges. Some of the challenges were: tarp banana slingshot challenge, where they try to get the banana into a bucket by hurtling it into the air with a tar. Then there’s the banana basketball challenge, where you attach a banana to a basketball and play basketball. Then there’s the banana ultimate Frisbee, which is relatively self explanatory. Finally there’s the banana hammer throw, where you attach a banana to a string and see how far you can throw it by swinging it around your head and letting it rip! Endless banana fun was had.
Now the campers are hitting their beds and resting up for another awesome day of adventures.
Happy Trails,

He started working at a Northern Wisconsin YMCA Camp as a wilderness trip leader while in college and fell in love with getting kids into nature. The smiles on kids faces after returning from a once in a life time wilderness experience is why he is here today. Zach brought his talents to Frost Valley YMCA, in 2014, when he started as the Trips Coordinator and soon was promoted to Adventure Director. Zach loves all forms of Wilderness exploration, though some would say his heart lies most with canoeing.
