Shifting Terrain – Artist Bios
Maxine Davidowitz
is a painter and printmaker living and working in West Shokan, NY. After a successful career as a magazine creative director, she returned to a fine art practice in 2008, studying under Annie Lapin, Claire Sherman, Nuala Clarke, Ilana Manolson, Donald Elder and others. She exhibits her work frequently at venues throughout the Northeast— including both solo and group shows at venues such as The Equity Gallery/NYC, The Lace Mill/Kingston, 510 Warren Street/Hudson, Unison Arts/New Paltz, ArtBar/Kingston, The Lodge at Woodloch/PA, Wired Gallery/High Falls, the tyte Gallery/ Millbrook, Perry Lawson Fine Arts/Nyack, the Woodstock School of Art and WAAM, The Woodstock Artists Association & Museum. She has been awarded residencies in Ireland, Wyoming and France; and in December 2024 she received the prestigious annual Yasuo Kuniyoshi Award for excellence in artistic achievement by WAAM, and in 2025 the Faber Birren Color Award by the Stamford Art Association. She is emeritus Chair of the Board of the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum.

Joan Barker
is an award-winning Hudson Valley artist who uses traditional and experimental methods in painting and photography. Her accolades include a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, a Village Voice Photography Grant, and the WAAM Sally Jacobs/Phoebe Towbin Award.
Her work has been exhibited globally—including at London’s Photographers’ Gallery and NYC’s OK Harris—and features in collections like the New York Public Library and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Joan holds an MFA from SUNY New Paltz, where she taught for 22 years and earned the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. A member of the Women Photographers Collective of the Hudson Valley, her work has been published in The New York Times and adapted for HOPPS Skateboards.

Bill Buchen
is a sculptor, musician, and author with a four-decade career spanning art, music, and community engagement. Alongside his late wife, Mary, he co-founded Sonic Architecture, pioneering sound parks and environmental art installations for over 70 locations worldwide.
A world-music percussionist who has performed at Carnegie Hall and on Broadway, Bill splits his time between NYC’s East Village and Claryville in the Catskills. An avid outdoor enthusiast, he has climbed all 35 Catskill High Peaks, moderates the local Tri-Valley Facebook community, and authored the novella The Land Between the Waters, which explores the ecology and history of the Neversink River.
