YEAH! Camp has officially started!!!!

June 29, 2009

We are so happy to finally have the campers here with us for the start of our first session!  Training went amazingly well and we, as counselors, have all made some great memories getting ready to share our experiences with the campers! As a side note – many of you are emailing John and Dan Weir about accessing the photos at SmugMug.  We will be emailing you all the password to view the albums for all of this season’s sessions.  We have limited internet at the farm so what I will be doing is every couple days get a DVD of photos to the main camp blogger group to upload …

Habitat in the Big Easy! Session 3

August 1, 2008

The Habitat New Orleans crew got off to a great start. The group was escorted to Newark by the legendary Bud Cox (Godfather of Adventure at Frost Valley). Where we met up with three of our fellow Habitat N.O.’s participants! They successfully boarded their plane and headed out. The first day at the site the group met at Habitats Camp Hope located to the East of the city, in an area that was deeply affected by Hurricane Katrina three years ago. The group got to see first hand the devastation that still affects the local population. After meeting and greeting our site foreman the group waited out a small thunderstorm …

Rolling across the country

July 7, 2008

The last few days have been packed for the Costa Rica Explorer.  Their whitewater rafting adventure was a great day.  In between the rapids, there were some water fights and a little pirating as well.  After their day on the water, the group headed to their respective homes for a night with a local family.  Kenny took Greg, Zach, and Sam with one family and Juliana had Alex and Vicky with another.  The families were marvelous hosts to the point that everyone wanted to stay with them another night.  Unfortunately, they just had time for one night and then moved on after assisting with some reforestation efforts going on in …

The Habitat Adirondacks crew made their journey safe and sound on Monday and arrived in Rollins Pond campground, their home for the next 10 days. After setting up camp, they cooked up some chili for dinner and stayed up for s’mores and some bonding by the fire. Tuesday was their first work day with Adirondack Habitat for Humanity. Susan Waters, our gracious Habitat hostess, greeted the group at the work site on Ampersand Avenue. After looking over the projects, the group split up and started getting dirty. George, Corrine, Caroline, and Lauren were on the fencing crew. They managed to dig post holes and install an entire length of fence …

Back on solid ground

August 23, 2007

After some cool but pleasant weather, the Maine Coast crew has arrived back in Acadia National Park for their final night in Maine. The latest leg of their adventure began on Sunday morning as they joined Coastal Kayak Tours for some sea kayaking just off the coast. Once they arrived at their destination they took part in a brief paddling clinic with their guide. Then the packed up their gear in the tandem kayaks and, along with their partner, paddled to their first island campsite. Their last few days have been filled with picturesque shorelines, island campgrounds, and some of the best paddling in the U.S. As if this wasn’t …

Trip Highlights

August 5, 2007

Adventure Village The 3-day trips are back and the stories are endless and entertaining. Here are some highlights: Delaware Canoe · We have a few canoe adventure trips out right now so we had to tap into one of our larger heavier metal canoes to outfit the Delaware voyagers. Olivia, Montana and Luke took the helm of the metal boat and its extra weight and sluggish response caused it to quickly be named the “Iron Snail”. By day two their teamwork and skills improved and the boat was rechristened as the “Silver Dragon”. · All rocks in the river became “whales”, and all sticks became “snakes”. As dutiful citizens of …

Paddling paradise!

August 3, 2007

Ontario Outback It seems that I made a mistake not sending myself on the Ontario Outback trip. They have been paddling for 2 days now and have loved every minute of it. They put in on Bell Lake on Wednesday after a night at George Lake Campground. Their first day of paddling was short and gave them plenty of time to set up their first backcountry campsite. The mosquitoes moved in at sunset, but didn’t bother everyone too much. Group dynamics are great as everyone seems to be pretty laid back. Thursday brought them more paddling and a portage to Balsam Lake. It was only 30 meters and they were …
