Ramble on

July 6, 2007

Only this group of teens could take a dreary, cold 4th of July and make it into a glorious day. We started off with chocolate chip pancakes and there was entertainment in the form of an inchworm. The group split up according to interests when they arrived in Lake Placid: some went to the horse show and others to mini-golf. After that, they met up in town to watch the parade, check out the stores along Main Street, and have a nice dinner out before the fireworks. They were joined by the Habitat crew on a tarp in the park and they slid down the wet hill with the annual …

Shania Twain?

July 6, 2007

I will get to the title in a bit, but first an update on what the Habitat Adirondacks crew has been up to. Wednesday brought a break from work as they went out for the 4th. Despite the rainy weather, everyone had a blast as they checked out Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. Quizno’s seemed happy to host a few of them for a while after lunch as they played cards and kept the atmosphere upbeat. Other folks checked out the many shops along Main Street including a great book store and an interesting hat shop. Later on, they met up with the Ramblers who had brought a tarp to …

Ampersand Mountain

July 3, 2007

We arrived at Meadowbrook Campground around 3:00 yesterday and had camp set up in no time. After some frisbee and gathering firewood, the cook crew prepared our dinner of rice & beans burritos. A small shower decided to greet us while we were eating, but the weather has been great otherwise. The shower just gave us a chance to make sure our tarp was in proper working order. I was awakened from my hammock by an annoying branch that mysteriously had moved right onto my nose (thanks Zach). After some delicious oatmeal, the crew packed up for their hike up Ampersand Mountain. This peak has some of the best views …

Whistle while you work

July 3, 2007

I found the Habitat Adirondacks crew in their campsite last night as they were finishing a dinner of Mac & Cheese with tuna. They have a beautiful site right by the water and withing walking distance of the showers (this made them very happy). This morning they enjoyed some cereal before heading to the Ampersand Avenue house for their first day of work. I joined them this morning for some landscaping, drainage improvements, and clean up. I left them as they were eating lunch at the local park. This afternoon they were going to continue with the drainage and landscaping work and so some concrete pouring for the doorways. Tomorrow …

A big day at the park

June 29, 2007

It was an early morning at Pete’s Pavilion on Thursday. After some final runs on the mountain boards, the group headed back to camp for lunch and some skating before the thunderstorms rolled in. There was a lot of work done on the rails and some doctoring of poses too. Sometimes to get a good photo, you have to get a little creative, right? Today the Boarding Basics crew headed to Skatetime 209 in Accord to get experience on more serious skating terrain. The crew was all over the park as they were perfecting 50-50’s and dropping in on some bigger ramps. After the park closed they had dinner out …
